HDR.toodee.de

This subdomain of toodee.de is a shortcut to check HDR media on Apple’s devices with EDR technology and other HDR capable devices. It works on most recent Apple devices with the latest iOS/MacOS versions installed.

Updated late June 2025 – another small victory! For the time ever I managed to show an HDR image directly on a WordPress page. It’s a workaround however, the HDR image is a so-called HDR-still-image export from Pixelmator Pro.

This is a standard dynamic range or so called SDR image.
A quick test

The image above is encoded for a standard sRGB display or so-called SDR. The next image that follows under this text is presented in HDR.

Below that you find a YouTube link to a clip that shows a small animation that is encoded as an HDR signal. YouTube supports HDR content with browsers like Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.
When the neon font appears a lot brighter, then your device can display HDR content that is embedded in this WordPress website.

This is a video still frame that presents itself a lot brighter on supported devices.

In case it does not work and the neon font does not appear brighter, try to view the clips directly on YouTube.com by clicking on the link in the video.

This is a HDR encoded clip uploaded to YouTube.

Did it work for you? This is how it works for myself

This WordPress page sadly does not always work as intended, but the last round of tests was very promising. I see the second image a lot brighter than the first one:

  • On an iPhone 15 ProMax (iOS 18.5) and Safari, the new “video” image, and the embedded YouTube clip are displayed in HDR.
  • On an iPadProXDR (iPadOS 18.5) with Safari the new “video” image and the embedded YouTube clip shows HDR as well.
  • On an MBP (M1-Max with MacOS Sequoia 15.5) the embedded still image and the YouTube clip shows HDR content with Safari (18.5), Google Chrome (138.0.x), but not with Firefox (140.x).
Other places that supports HDR images and videos:
  • Instagram – pictures, stories and reels
  • Threads – picutures but I am not sure about videos
  • TikTok – image and videos
  • YoutTube – videos, with “Shorts” I as not successful yet.

Here are two useful but already a bit dated links to learn more about HDR content on the Mac and the EDR technology:
Displaying HDR Content in a Metal Layer
Explore HDR rendering with EDR from WWDC 2021.

More example clips can be found on the HDR-Gallery page.

My HDR articles

My interest in HDR was growing over the last years and in 2020 I got finally the chance to explore the topic further. Check out:
